Beware - you never know who will read your CV!

A recent article in a specialist HR magazine has reported that more and more CVs are being read by computer or by junior HR admin staff who only looking for specific keywords or phrases.  In effect unless your CV has the correct phrase or word combination it will not be seen by the person who will subsequently decide whether to interview you for the job.

So what can you do to ensure your CV has the correct word or phrase?  One tip is to make sure you have what the job ad is asking for.  Therefore if it asks for "excellent Microsoft Office skills" or "knowledge of Sage" you need to make sure you use that phrase or a similar one in your CV.  However, a word of warning, if you haven't got these skills and you decide to tell a white lie you will be found out!  That will almost certainly mean the recruitment company will ignore you for future job opportunities and make your job search even harder.

Avoid the problems associated with meeting the employer's requirements by getting skills in these and other applications by training in the relevant subjects.  Employers and recruitment companies say that they will always favour candidates who have certificates to prove their skill level over those who just say they have.  Call Pitman on 01483 572855 to learn how you could imnprove your CV today!

Beware recruitment company tests on Microsoft Office!

If you have ever applied for a job via an interview at a recruitment company you may have been asked to do a series of tests in Microsoft Office.

The purpose of these is to see what level of aptitude you have (often classed as basic, intermediate or expert) in Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.  We have noticed that some of the tests are very basic resulting in people with, what we consider basic skills in Excel for example, to be classed as Expert!  This has meant that people may have been hired for a position with very basic skills when advanced skills were required.  One imagines that their career was short lived.

Whilst all recruitment companies are not guilty we recommend that the only way to demonstrate that you have the required level of skill is to study a course and get a recognised and up to date qualification.  This almost certainly means that you do not need to sit the dreaded test.  Call Pitman Guildford on 01483 572855 to learn more.
